Frequently asked questions

What is ketamine?

Ketamine is a medication. Its primary use has been for maintaining anesthesia due to the euphoric trance-like state it induces. It has been used as an anesthetic since the 1960s and the World Health Organization (WHO) places ketamine on its list of essential medicines. Recent studies have found that ketamine is a highly effective treatment for depression and anxiety.

Is ketamine addictive?

Ketamine has not been shown to cause physical addiction. However, like many medications, there is a risk of psychological dependence when taken excessively.

Is ketamine used recreationally?

Ketamine has a reputation for being used for illicit activity and is classified as a schedule III drug under the DEA Controlled Substances Act; it is not classified as an opioid (narcotic) or barbiturate. Wondermed utilizes low-dose treatment combined with patient protocols to ensure our patients are using it safely, for a medical diagnosis.

Is ketamine legal?

Yes, ketamine has been available by prescription in the U.S. since the 1970s with its primary use to block sensory perception. Esketamine, the S-enantiomer of racemic ketamine, was approved in 2019 for treatment-resistant depression and is approved for use in depressed patients with acute suicidal ideation or behavior. The use of low-dose ketamine for anxiety and depression is considered “off-label” but is completely legal; last year the American Psychiatric Association published a statement saying that the antidepressant effects of ketamine are both rapid and robust.

Can you overdose on ketamine?

As with any medication, you can overdose. However, our Wondermed low-dose lozenges provide a safe, measured dose of ketamine.

How can this treatment help me?

Ketamine has been scientifically proven to help people with anxiety by increasing neuroplasticity. Unlike benzodiazepines, a class of traditional anti-anxiety medications which numb the symptoms of anxiety, ketamine allows the brain to create new neural pathways and disrupt thought-loops, treating the root of anxiety.

How long does treatment last?

Our products are a non-daily solution that can be customized to the individual. The average treatment plan is 3 - 6 months, including monthly renewal calls to ensure the medication and dosage is still right for each patient.

How does it feel to take ketamine?

This will vary from person to person. The effects range from a state of serene relaxation to a deep meditative state. The beauty of ketamine is that it allows individuals to observe their thoughts and gain valuable insights into their life.

How do you determine dose?

Ketamine dosage is dependent on a multitude of factors. Wondermed bases its low dose protocol on industry standards such as weight and prior experience with psychedelics.

What is the difference between oral ketamine and ketamine infusion therapy?

Oral ketamine is simply a different way for ketamine to enter your body. It is far less invasive and easier to self-administer. The major difference is that infusion therapy has a much higher bioavailability as it is injected directly into your bloodstream. This bioavailability is the reason why oral ketamine doses are actually higher. We have worked extensively with our compound pharmacy to create an oral ketamine lozenge that has consistent and dependable bioavailability.

How long does ketamine last?

The effects of oral ketamine will last anywhere from 40 - 80 minutes. While you may feel completely oriented once your therapeutic session is over, driving a car or operating heavy machinery is prohibited for 6 hours.

When will ketamine treatment for anxiety be available in my state?

Currently, our oral ketamine treatment is only available in California, Florida, Texas, Nevada, Connecticut, Colorado, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Arizona. However, we are working on expanding nationally. Take our eligibility survey and we will email you when we're in your state.
